The Virginia Marriage License: Your First Step Before you can say "I do,"

The good news? It's incredibly straightforward and affordable in Virginia!

Here’s How It Works:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Gather the required documentation. This includes:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID for both applicants (driver's license, passport, or military ID)

  • Social security number

  • Full names of both applicants' parents (including full middle names) as they appear on their birth certificates

  • Visit the circuit court clerk's office in any Virginia city or county. (You and your partner must both be present to apply for the license.)

  • Pay the applicable fee. Cash, credit cards, and debit cards are accepted.

  • Complete the marriage license application:

  • This application will ask for basic information about you and your partner, such as your names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers.

  • Sign the application and have it witnessed by a clerk or deputy clerk.

  • Receive your marriage license. The license will be valid for 60 days from the date of issue.

Note: You must contact a State Commissioned Wedding Officiant to perform your ceremony.
